What's Happening at Humboldt General

Misty Carlo, Humboldt General Hospital's Clinical Informatics Coordinator, recently oversaw an update to the hospital-wide computer software system. The six-hour download, which took place on Saturday, July 25, went very smoothly, said Carlo. HGH successfully installed the multi-million-dollar system last year from Healthcare Management Systems, Inc. The system fully integrates the clinical and financial sides of the hospital.

Humboldt General Hospital CEO/Administrator Jim Parrish was recently named a 2009 "Healthcare Hero" by the Nevada Business Magazine. "I was very surprised and very honored," said Parrish of the honor, "and I accept this honor on behalf of our entire hospital team." Parrish received the "Administrator" award during an awards ceremony dinner July 30, at the Silver Legacy Resort Casino in Reno. He was accompanied by his wife, Karrie.

Kim Howell (center), a representative from The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, presented HGH's Emergency and EMS departments with 200 handmade bears for distribution to ill and injured children. ER Nurse Manager Rita Clement (left) and EMS Director Pat Songer (right, holding 3-year-old Renn Maher), were on hand to accept the gift and give their thanks to the church's young women who made the bears as part of a summer camp service project.

Dr. Bradford Granath, a family practice/OB physician, recently set aside time to retake his national board exams for recertification though the American Board of Family Practice. During this past cycle, he scored very well in several areas including female reproductive care, cardiopulmonary medicine, sports medicine and musculoskeletal medicine. To his delight, in the area of maternity care-his specialty-Dr. Granath scored 100 percent.

The ER Elves preparing to make their deliveries. Humboldt General Hospital joined with Humboldt Printers and Financial Horizons Credit Union in December to help provide Christmas for over 150 needy children and families through the Abundant Tree Gift Program. The ER nurses and clerical staff pictured at left not only provided a lovely Christmas for a single mother in our community and her three children, but they delivered the gifts and offered the struggling family a good dose of holiday cheer.

Harmony Manor, Humboldt General Hospital's long-term care facility, recently achieved a five-star rating in overall quality. In Nevada, 12 nursing homes received an overall one-star rating, which still meets Medicare's baseline conditions. “So that gives some insight into how 'above and beyond' our facility is,” said HGH CEO/Administrator Jim Parrish. “There's a reason why it's a five-star facility: the whole staff works really hard to take care of our residents.”

Thursday, February 25, was a day that Dr. Bradford Granath will never forget. The Winnemucca family physician not only delivered two babies within the same minute, but the two baby girls were cousins. That Thursday, Louann Logan showed up at Humboldt General Hospital at 5 a.m. Little did she know that her sister, Barbara Logan, also nearly nine months pregnant, had been laboring since 2 a.m. that same morning; she showed up at the hospital at 6 a.m. in the room next door.
