On Tuesday, June 14, 2011, Humboldt General Hospital installed a time capsule in its new medical office building. 
    Hospital officials said they thought it would be fun to give the next generation a snapshot look at what the local operation looks like now, at the time of its biggest expansion to date. 
    "We don't know what the future holds," said CEO/Administrator Jim Parrish, "but we are confident this hospital will still be standing in five decades." 
    He added, "For over 100 years, it has been Humboldt County healthcare home, and we think it will be interesting to give those who follow us a glimpse into our time." 
    The capsule is positioned to the side of the staircase that descends from the entrance lobby to the main floor of the new medical office building. Crews cut a hole into the wall, into which they inserted a container that is brimming with information about the current hospital operation, the Humboldt County community, and a bounty of memorabilia including: a cell phone/pager; a newspaper; EMS patches and pins; an HGH coin that was minted from the silver byproduct of the hospital's x-rays; photos of the hospital's current IT servers; a Hot Rodding magazine; a current salary schedule; the current price of gold; administration business cards; photos of the hospital's operating room; a copy of the hospital's quarterly newsletter; a charge master; an article about the hospital; a photo of the acute department; a JEMS (Journal of Emergency Medicine) magazine; a copy of a hospital bill; the current price of a Ford truck; business cards from CTA architects, who designed the new medical office building, and R&O Construction, who oversaw construction; and a variety of other miscellaneous items.
    The capsule also includes a photo of Humboldt County's first baby of the 2011 New Year, Jazlyn Cheever. 
    The time capsule will not be opened until Jazlyn is 50 years old, in the year 2061. 
    A plaque mounted over the time capsule in the wall reads: HGH; Time Capsule; Do not remove until 2061; Created and placed in 2011 by the staff of Humboldt General Hospital. 
    Doug Rosier of Signs Now, the Las Vegas company that manufactured the outside plaque for the capsule, joined with Jeff Simpson, a project engineer with R&O Construction, to install the capsule. 
    Before the final plaque went on, a small group of HGH personnel signed their names on top of the metal "capsule" box, including CFO Larry Hutcheson, Quality/Risk Management Director Andy Hum, Credentialing Specialist Melissa Lopez, and Community Education and Development Director Nicole Maher. Maher's son, Dain, also joined the group.
    "We are proud of the operation we have built up in our community," said Parrish. "Our only hope is that when that time capsule is opened, this hospital will be even more successful and capable of meeting the healthcare needs of the Humboldt County community than it is today."
