Local Physician Earns Board Certification in Hospital Medicine

Dr. Shouping Li has yet another certification to add to his growing list.
The Humboldt General Hospital family practice/cardiology physician recently achieved certification through the American Board of Hospital Medicine, an affiliate of the American Board of Physician Specialties, which is the official certifying body of the American Association of Physician Specialists, Inc.
Dr. Li also certified with the American Board of Family Medicine in 2007 and the National Board of Echocardiography (Cardiology), also in 2007. Additionally, he is a Fellow of the American College of Cardiology.
Thomas G. Pelz, D.O, chairperson of the American Board of Hospital Medicine, notified Dr. Li of his board certification late last year. "Certification in any specialty is the culmination of many years of preparation and experience and you should be proud of your accomplishment," he told Dr. Li.
The American Board of Physician Specialties was organized in 1950 to provide a clinically recognized mechanism for specialty certification of physicians with advanced training.
In order to attain specialty certification, licensed physicians must meet the rigorous requirements of the appropriate certification board and AAPS/ABPS including advanced training, significant experience, good moral character and successful completion of a specialty written examination.
As a diplomate of the American Board of Hospital Medicine, Dr. Li must recertify every eight years. He also will need to obtain and document 50 hours of continuing medical education annually, with at least 25 of the hours in his specialty.
Dr. Li began working at Humboldt General Hospital in August 2007. He graduated from medical school in China in 1984, followed by a residency in internal medicine from 1984 through 1987; from 1987 to 1988, he was chief resident in internal medicine at the Xuzhou Medical College in China.
In 1992, he completed a 4-year Ph.D. program in Cardiovascular Imaging from the Chinese Academy of Medical Sciences. During that same interim, Dr. Li was a cardiology fellow at the Cardiovascular Institute and Fu Wai Hospital.
From 1992 through 1994, Dr. Li was an assistant professor and cardiologist at the Cardiovascular Institute and Fu Wai Hospital before being promoted to associate professor of medicine and cardiologist from 1994 to 1995.
In 1995, Dr. Li traveled to the United States as a cardiology research instructor at the University of Nebraska Medical Center in Omaha. In 1999, he was granted a permanent immigrant visa due to his status as a "First Preference Outstanding Researcher" by the U.S. In November 2006, he became a U.S. citizen.
Dr. Li is registered as a cardiac sonographer for both pediatric and adult sonography. He also holds a USA patent for compensated digital subtraction for echocardiography. Among his many awards and achievements, Dr. Li was awarded the very prestigious "Prize of Scientific and Technologic Achievement" by the Ministry of Public Health in China for his echocardiographic research in 1993.
He also is the author of dozens of scholarly articles, book chapters and abstracts and is a much sought-after lecturer on Doppler echocardiography.
Dr. Li treats patients ranging in age from infants to the elderly.
"I'm here to serve the community," he said. "I can treat everyone from a baby's first visit to the doctor all the way to those with thick, thick files."
