'Pink Lady' Auxiliary Donates More Than $55,000 to HGH

The Humboldt Hospital Auxiliary donated more than $55,000 to Humboldt General Hospital recently to purchase a new pulmonary function lab. Pictured here, from left to right, is HGH CEO/Administrator Jim Parrish, 2010-2011 Recording Secretary Kathleen Schlicht, 2010-2011 Publicity Chairman Inez Davis, 2010-2011 President Norm Burnett, 2010-2011 Treasurer Carol Acree, and Poke & Peek Chairman Joe McIntyre.     Over the past four decades, the Humboldt Hospital Auxiliary has provided generous annual support to Humboldt General Hospital.
This year was no different as the all-volunteer organization donated over $55,000 to the hospital for the purchase of new equipment for the Respiratory Therapy department.
Jim Parrish, CEO/Administrator of Humboldt General Hospital, said the Auxiliary's generosity continues to be a source of amazement to him and to the hospital.
"This money represents thousands of volunteer hours," he said. "We try not to forget that as we make requests from these good people."
Parrish added, "Their time very much translates into money for our hospital, and we are very grateful."
The new pulmonary function lab comes at a cost of $55,117.42. It replaces an older one at the hospital which, according to HGH Respiratory Therapy Manager Arnie Prissing, had become obsolete.
"We could no longer access any parts or service," said Prissing.
The lab's function is to assess all the various volumes in the lungs, check airway health, and assess the exchange of gases with the bloodstream in the lungs.
Prissing said a standard pulmonary function test covers all of these areas
"It is the gold standard for assessment of lung health," he said, "and this new machine puts Humboldt General on par with any equipment used nationwide."
Prissing said the new lab will produce needed results for area doctors, pulmonologists located in other areas, as well as meet the demanding requirements for pre-employment testing for area mines.
"This new machine allows us to continue to offer top quality pulmonary testing here in Winnemucca," said Prissing. "Without it, patients would be making that 330-mile round trip to Reno to have these vital tests done."
Since 1969, the Humboldt Hospital Auxiliary has donated over $2 million to Humboldt General Hospital.
The Auxiliary is one of Humboldt County's longest standing and most respected volunteer organizations. Members, who are known by their pink jackets, serve as the fundraising arm of Humboldt General Hospital.
Auxiliary members-both men and women-volunteer their time at the group's main funding source, the Poke & Peek Thrift Shop, where they sort, price, display and sell clothing, toys, books and household items. They also help out at Harmony Manor and within the hospital itself.
